Kano Suspends Health Workers After Mother-of-Five Dies Following Surgery

The Kano State Hospitals Management Board has suspended three health workers over the death of Aishatu Umar, a housewife whose passing has been linked to alleged medical negligence at the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre in Kano.

The suspension, which takes immediate effect, followed a preliminary investigation ordered by the Executive Secretary of the Board, Mansur Mudi Nagoda. This was confirmed in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Board’s Public Relations Officer, Samira Suleiman.

According to the statement, findings from the initial probe established that the incident involving the late Umar occurred at the facility, prompting swift administrative action against the personnel directly involved.

“In line with our commitment to accountability, professionalism, and patient safety, the Board has outrightly suspended three personnel directly connected to the case from clinical duties with immediate effect,” Suleiman said.

She added that the matter has been referred to the Kano State Medical Ethical Committee for further investigation and appropriate disciplinary measures in line with existing laws, professional regulations, and ethical standards.

The Board expressed deep condolences to the family of the deceased and reassured the public that negligence would not be tolerated in any of the state’s health facilities. It also pledged to strengthen internal monitoring and enforcement of professional standards to prevent a recurrence.

Aishatu Umar, a mother of five, reportedly died in the early hours of Tuesday after enduring months of severe abdominal pain following a surgical procedure carried out at the hospital in September 2025. Family members had alleged that the pain persisted for four months before her death, raising concerns about possible medical errors.

The incident has reignited public debate over patient safety and accountability in public health facilities, with authorities assuring residents that a thorough investigation is ongoing and that anyone found culpable will face appropriate sanctions.
