IGP’s tenure extension: NBA drags Buhari to court

GIFT ROBERTS

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has filed a suit against President Muhammadu Buhari over the extension of the tenure of the Inspector General of Police, Adamu Mohammed.

President Buhari recently extended Mohammed’s service years to three months, after his tenure expired this February.

The NBA in its suit filed before the Federal High Court in Lagos, is asking that the decision of the president be reversed and that the IGP should be ordered to vacate office.

The association argued that Adamu’s continuous stay in office is in contravention of the provisions of section 215(1)(a) of the constitution.

“An order directing the 3rd Defendant to vacate forthwith the office of the Inspector General of Police and refund all salaries, allowances, and benefits received from February 1, 2021, (when he retired from the Police Force) to the coffers of the Federal Government of Nigeria”, NBA said in the suit.

The NBA president, Olumide Akpata, speaking on the suit said the body took the decision due to its  motto of promoting the rule of law.
