Bauchi Gov launches 2023 tree planting


…declares war on charcoal business, illegal Felling of trees

Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed on Thursday launched the 2023 tree planting, declaring war on those involved in charcoal business, illegal felling of trees, and other unwholesome environmental practices across the state.

Speaking shortly before planting trees at the Dungal Housing Estate along Jo’s road, Bauchi, Governor Mohammed lamented that a few unscrupulous persons in a section of the state are colliding with other bad elements to fell trees for charcoal at the detriment of the environment.

Mohammed stressed that his administration will wage serious war against felling of trees and the perpetrators saying that anyone caught will not be spared.

While stressing the importance of tree planting considering the climatic conditions which is leading to unpredictable weather conditions, he called on residents of the state to ensure that they plant trees in order to fight the ravaging climatic conditions.

He also assured that his administration will continue to promote planting of trees in order to protect the environment and make habitation beautiful and conducive to live in.

The Governor called on youths to make tree planting a source of employment to earn a living for themselves stressing that government cannot give empowerment for everyone.

He also called on the traditional rulers to encourage their subjects to embark on massive tree planting all year round without waiting for the official period of tree planting.

Governor Mohammed further called on the Caretaker Chairmen to set aside period for tree planting in order to save the environment considering the terrain of the state particularly the Northern part of the state which is devastated by desertification.

He said that planting trees is an important activity that helps restore the quality of the environment and provides shade and beautification of the environment, adding that other benefits of trees in the environment include wind protection, protection against water flooding, soil erosion, drought as well as mitigating the effects of climate change among others.

In his opening remarks, the Commissioner of Housing and Environment, Rt Hon Danlami Ahmed Kawule said that, ‘I cannot stress enough, how critical it is for us to acknowledge the significant impact of climate change on our planet and take Immediate action to combat its effects.”

He added that the rising global temperatures, extreme weather events, and the loss of biodiversity are just a few of the consequences we face saying, “However, we can take solace in the fact that there is a simple tool readily available to us, that is trees.”

Kawule emphasized that trees are not only majestic and beautiful, they are also essential for survival as they provide man with oxygen, absorb carbon dioxide, and play a crucial role in regulating our climate.

He added that it should also be noted that through their natural process of photosynthesis, trees absorb sunlight and convert it into energy, releasing oxygen as a byproduct, a process not only helps combat climate change but also improves air quality, making our cities greener and healthier places to live.

“By planting trees, we are not just beautifying our surroundings; we are actively contributing to the fight against climate change. The simple act of planting a tree may seem small, but collectively, it has a tremendous impact. Each tree we plant helps to combat carbon emissions, reduce soil erosion, and create habitats for countless species,” he added.

According to him,”Today, as we embark on this annual tree planting campaign, let us remember that no matter how small our deeds may seem, they have the power to make a significant difference. I encourage each and every one of us to embrace this opportunity and actively participate in our tree planting efforts.”

The Commissioner explained that, “Whether it is planting a tree in your backyard, supporting reforestation projects, or advocating for sustainable practices, all contributions count.”

“Let us come together as a community and make a lasting commitment to our environment. By planting trees today, we are securing a healthier future for our future generations. Together, we can turn the tide on climate change and create a legacy that will stand the test of time,” he added.

While commending the Governor for prompt support to the Ministry of Housing and Environment to carry out the year’s exercise successfully, he informed that the 2023 planting exercise is a road side plantation which covers a distance of 12.6km from Miri village to Mobil Roundabout (Gidan Mai) with three rows of trees both sides.

The essence of which will create view aesthetic and improve carbon capture as Similar exercise is in the pipeline, where trees will be planted from Awalah Roundabout to the Airport.

At the event were the Deputy Governor, The SSG, The Chief of Staff, the PPS, Hon Commissioners, members State House of Assembly, Traditional rulers, and Religious leaders among other dignitaries.
