Northern Govs Forum condemns Christmas eve attacks, killings in Plateau

The Northern Governors Forum has vehemently condemned the reprehensible and heinous Christmas Eve attacks on communities in Bokkos and Barkin-Ladi Local Government Areas of Plateau State.

Governor Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State, chairman of the forum, expressed deep dismay on behalf of the 19 northern governors, denouncing the violence that claimed more than 100 lives and caused significant property damage.

In a statement issued by his media aide, Mr Ismaila Uba-Misilli, Governor Yahaya extended the forum’s heartfelt condolences to the affected families, communities, and the entire people of Plateau. He emphasized the disturbing nature of the attacks, particularly occurring during a time when people were preparing to celebrate Christmas.

“Such acts of violence are not only cowardly but also run counter to the spirit of unity and coexistence that our region upholds. We must all prioritize peace and harmonious living in our communities,” stated Governor Yahaya.

The chairman urged a reaffirmation of the commitment to peaceful coexistence and solidarity regardless of differences. He called for unity in the face of adversity and lauded Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau for his leadership in handling the situation following the attacks.

Governor Yahaya assured Mutfwang that the Northern governors stand united in solidarity and expressed their determination to work together to ensure lasting peace in Plateau. He commended the security agencies operating in the area while urging them to intensify efforts in safeguarding lives and property through increased vigilance and swift actions.

“It is imperative that those responsible for the heinous acts are swiftly apprehended and made to face the full weight of justice,” Governor Yahaya stressed, emphasizing the need for accountability in the face of such atrocities.

The gunmen attacked 15 communities in Bokkos and Barkin-Ladi Local Government Areas on Christmas Eve, resulting in the tragic loss of 96 lives, destruction of 221 houses, and damage to eight vehicles and 27 motorcycles.
