Protesting workers stop LASU’s resumption, lock out VC, students

Protesting workers at the Lagos State University, Ojo have locked out the institution’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olanrewaju Fagboun, and students as the university resumes Monday after the COVID-19 break.

Four unions are involved in the protest and they include the Academic Staff Union of Universities, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, Non-Academic Staff Union, and the National Association of Academic Technologists.

Members of the unions had locked the university gate as early as 7am, preventing workers from gaining entry into the campus.

The LASU staff were protesting non-payment of the salary increment promised them by the Lagos State Government over a year ago.

They claimed that other Lagos State workers had received the increment but all the tertiary institutions in Lagos State were yet to be included.

Attempts by the vice chancellor to appeal to the unions did not yield any fruit as their officials remained adamant.

The protest by the unions, it was learnt, is holding simultaneously across tertiary institutions in the state.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had asked final-year undergraduate students of Lagos State tertiary institutions to resume today, September 21, 2020.
