CBN declares Naira best-performing currency globally, amid FX reforms

In a significant turnaround, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Yemi Cardoso, has announced that Nigeria’s currency, the naira, has emerged as the best-performing currency worldwide, propelled by the CBN’s foreign exchange (FX) reforms.

Speaking at a briefing during the World Bank/IMF Spring Meetings in Washington DC, Cardoso highlighted the positive impact of the CBN’s FX initiatives, stating, “April saw the naira emerge as the best-performing currency globally, supported by bullish sentiment from leading international investment institutions.”

Cardoso emphasized the robust activities in Nigeria’s FX market, with turnover reaching unprecedented levels not seen in over seven years. He underscored the confidence instilled among investors, businesses, and other stakeholders, ensuring enhanced fluidity in their engagements with Nigeria’s FX markets.

Despite this achievement, Cardoso remained cautious, acknowledging the persistent challenges confronting Nigeria’s economy, including the escalating inflation rate. He stated, “However, we remain vigilant, recognizing the challenges that persist, such as elevated inflation driven by rising food prices, transportation costs, and energy expenses.”

Addressing security concerns in food-producing regions and infrastructure challenges, Cardoso outlined the CBN’s implementation of policy reforms to mitigate these pressures. He expressed confidence in the decelerated rate of inflation and anticipated a forthcoming decline.

While celebrating early successes, Cardoso reiterated the ongoing commitment to addressing existing challenges through collaborative efforts with key stakeholders, including investors, banks, businesses, and fiscal counterparts.

The declaration underscores a positive shift in Nigeria’s economic landscape, signaling optimism amidst ongoing reforms and concerted efforts to overcome prevailing challenges.
