Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State revealed on Saturday that plans are underway to construct a brand new stadium in the state.
The initiative aims to nurture talents capable of representing Ondo and Nigeria in international competitions.
This announcement was made during an event commemorating the 2024 Olympic Day Run held at the Ondo State Sports Complex in Akure.
Governor Aiyedatiwa, represented by his deputy, Olayide Adelami, emphasized the state’s commitment to providing a befitting stadium and prioritizing the welfare of athletes.
The governor stated that efforts are in top gear to commence work at the new stadium site, alleviating the pressure on the existing facilities.
“Efforts are on to award the contract for the new stadium at Araromi in Akure to curb the overstretching of facilities at the Ondo State Sports Complex and enhance sports development in the state,” Aiyedatiwa said.
“The contract for upgrading Akure township stadium has been awarded to a reputable contractor to meet international standards. Other mini stadia in Ondo, Ikare, and Ile Oluji will also be developed soon.”
Governor Aiyedatiwa highlighted the importance of sports for social interaction and integration among youths.
He assured that his administration would continue to support the objectives of the Olympic celebration, promoting national unity and grassroots sports development.
“Sports is very dear to our hearts in Ondo, and our administration will not relent in its efforts to engage the people in sporting activities for health benefits and as a career to employ the youth gainfully,” he added.
In his welcome address, Saka Ogunleye, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, reiterated the administration’s dedication to prioritizing sports.
He stated that the event’s sustainability demonstrated sports as a tool for promoting global peace.
“Our target is to ensure that our athletes can compete with their counterparts outside the state, win laurels, and represent Nigeria in international competitions,” Ogunleye said.
Sylvester Ikuejamoye, representing the Nigeria Olympic Committee, also emphasized the role of sports in maintaining a strong mind and body, advocating for healthy living through regular sporting activities.
The event, which included Olympians and local sportsmen and women, started from the Government House and concluded at the state sports complex, symbolizing the state’s ongoing commitment to sports development and youth engagement.
