Vice President Kashim Shettima visited Maiduguri on Monday to console victims and families affected by the recent suicide bombings in Gwoza, Borno State.
The bombings, which claimed 32 lives, left 42 injured, with 14 already discharged from the State Specialist Hospital in Maiduguri where they received treatment.
Shettima expressed heartfelt condolences, echoing the sentiments of President Bola Tinubu, who emphasized the nation’s commitment to combat terrorism and uphold justice.
The Vice President, accompanied by key officials including the Director General of NEMA and the Minister of Agriculture, acknowledged the efforts of emergency services and local agencies in providing support amidst the tragic circumstances.
He noted, “The heart of President Bola Tinubu is with the victims, and he specifically instructed us to come and offer our condolences and commiserations to the victims of this incident.”
The attack, carried out by a young female bomber during a gathering following a wedding celebration, disrupted the peace of the community near a busy motorpark.
Security analyst Zagazola Makama described the chaotic scene, underscoring the civilian nature of the victims and the immediate response by emergency services.
President Tinubu strongly condemned the bombings, reaffirming his administration’s resolve to safeguard citizens against such acts of terror.
The Vice President’s visit also included attendance at the funeral prayer for the late mother of former Borno Governor Ali Modu Sheriff.
In attendance were prominent officials including the Deputy Governor of Borno State, the Senate Chief Whip, and the Minister of Agriculture, underscoring the solidarity and support for the affected community during this challenging time.
