The House of Representatives minority caucus has called for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
In a special meeting held in Abuja on Monday night, over 180 lawmakers from minority political parties supported a motion moved by Mr. Obi Aguocha, who represents Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency in Abia State.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Aguocha urged his colleagues to take a definitive position on the ongoing efforts to find a political solution to Kanu’s continued detention.
The minority caucus comprises the Peoples Democratic Party (115 seats), Labour Party (35 seats), New Nigeria Peoples Party (19 seats), and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (5 seats).
Additionally, the Social Democratic Party has two seats, while the Young Progressives Party and the African Democratic Congress each hold two seats.
Aguocha stressed the importance of unity within the minority caucus, highlighting that the resolution on Kanu’s case is crucial for national peace, stability, and unity.
“Today, the opposition parties have taken a decisive stand on Nnamdi Kanu, the planned protest, insecurity, the dilapidated infrastructure, and the economy,” he said.
He called for immediate and strategic engagement with relevant stakeholders to advocate for a peaceful and political resolution to the matter, emphasizing that dialogue and reconciliation are the best approaches rather than prolonged legal confrontations.
Aguocha believes that a political solution could enhance national integration and restore trust among various communities.
The motion’s adoption followed Aguocha’s recent visits to former President Muhammadu Buhari, among other interventions.
