The Borno State Police Command has re-arrested Auwalu Aminu, also known as Auwalu Kirkir, who escaped from the Maiduguri Medium Security Custodial Centre following severe flooding in September.
Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Daso, confirmed the arrest in a statement on Wednesday.
Aminu, 24, had been serving a sentence for criminal conspiracy and theft when the facility’s fence collapsed during the floods, allowing him to flee.
“Auwalu Aminu, who was serving a jail term for criminal conspiracy and theft, unfortunately escaped during the flood incident in September 2024, which led to the collapse of the correctional facility’s fence,” Daso explained.
Aminu was apprehended on October 16, 2024, by officers from the Bama Area Command and Banki Divisional Headquarters, after a tip-off that he had been spotted in Banki town.
“The police swiftly acted on credible intelligence and re-arrested the fugitive, who will now be handed back to the Nigeria Correctional Service for further action,” the statement added.
Aminu’s re-arrest brings the total number of escapees recaptured to three, following the earlier arrests of Abubakar Mohammed and Kyari Kur.
Over 281 inmates had escaped from the correctional facility during the flood disaster.
