Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed concern over Nigeria’s growing insecurity and called for urgent action to address the menace.

Speaking during a visit to Bauchi on Sunday, Obasanjo stressed that security was a top priority during his time in office and urged the current leadership to adopt proactive measures.

Obasanjo met with the Emir of Bauchi, Dr. Rilwanu Adamu, while in the state to inaugurate projects initiated by Governor Bala Mohammed. He emphasised the importance of community policing as an effective way to combat insecurity, noting that many criminals reside within local communities.

“During our terms in office, we prioritised the security of lives and properties across the country. Right now, we need to do something urgently about this,” Obasanjo said. “Everyone knows his/her neighbours within the community. With that, it is very easy to identify the bad eggs.”

The former president called on traditional institutions to play an active role in promoting community policing to help reduce crime.

Earlier, Bauchi State Governor, Sen. Bala Mohammed, highlighted that Obasanjo’s visit was to celebrate his administration’s commitment to good governance.

The former president was set to commission two road projects aimed at enhancing the state’s development and improving transportation.
