A tragic helicopter crash in Houston’s Second Ward on Sunday night has left multiple people dead, according to local authorities.
The incident, which occurred around 7:54 p.m., saw a private helicopter strike a radio tower, triggering a massive fire that engulfed several blocks, as confirmed by officials during a news conference held by Chief J. Noe Diaz.
Four individuals were on board the helicopter, including a child. Though the identities of the victims have not yet been disclosed, Diaz confirmed that there were no survivors from the crash.
The helicopter involved in the accident was identified as a Robinson R44, which had taken off from Ellington Field earlier in the evening. Its intended destination remains unknown at this time.
The collision with the radio tower caused the aircraft to burst into flames, sparking a fire that spread across three city blocks. Fortunately, the surrounding businesses were closed at the time of the crash, limiting the number of potential injuries on the ground.
However, authorities are still investigating whether any individuals in the vicinity were harmed.
First responders from the Houston Fire Department and police quickly arrived at the scene to contain the blaze and prevent further damage.
The fire disrupted business activities in the area, leaving some establishments temporarily closed as investigations continue.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have launched a formal investigation into the crash. Their inquiry will focus on determining the cause of the collision, as well as reviewing the helicopter’s flight path, mechanical condition, and weather conditions at the time of the accident.
The crash has left the Houston community in shock, and local authorities have extended their condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the incident.
Further updates are expected as the investigation unfolds, with officials urging patience as they work to uncover the details behind this devastating accident.
