The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has announced plans to launch a nationwide birth registration drive, aimed at ensuring every child in Nigeria can access essential services like education, healthcare, and social protection.

The Director General of NOA, Malam Lanre Issa-Onilu, represented by David Akoji, Director of Special Duties and States Operations, explained that the initiative will focus on registering children aged 0–5 years and providing them with a National Identification Number (NIN) at no cost.

“NOA, in partnership with the National Population Commission (NPC) and UNICEF, is launching a nationwide birth registration social mobilisation drive,” Issa-Onilu stated.

“This drive aims to ensure that every child in Nigeria has access to essential services like education, healthcare, and social protection. We are focusing on registering all children aged 0–5 years and providing them with an NIN free of charge.”

He emphasised the importance of birth registration as a “fundamental right of every child,” describing it as the first legal recognition of a child’s existence, which helps safeguard their rights and access to essential services.

“Birth registration is a fundamental right of every child, and this initiative highlights its importance to the child, family, community, and nation. It is the first legal acknowledgement of a child’s existence, safeguarding their rights and privileges, and unlocking access to basic services crucial for their development and future,” he said.

According to Issa-Onilu, accurate birth data is critical for national planning, as it aids in developing education, healthcare, and public services.

“By registering a child’s birth, families ensure recognition by the state, protecting them from abuse, exploitation, and statelessness,” he added.

He encouraged parents to take advantage of the free registration process by visiting the nearest NPC centre with supporting documents like an immunisation card or birth certificate.

“The process is simple, free, and requires only supporting documents like an immunisation card or existing birth certificate,” he said.

During the mobilisation drive, every child registered will receive a NIN following face capturing and birth registration. Issa-Onilu urged the public to participate actively.

“We urge all parents, guardians, and community leaders to participate in this crucial exercise. Let’s work together to give every child in Nigeria the best start in life,” he appealed.

The birth registration initiative, which commenced in August, will continue through November 2024.

Issa-Onilu encouraged families to seize this opportunity, stating, “Don’t miss this opportunity to ensure every child in your community has access to vital services.”
