The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, recently shed light on the ongoing debate surrounding famed cross-dresser Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, describing it as a telling sign of deep-rooted institutional challenges in Nigeria.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, Tunji-Ojo pointed to the recent saga of Bobrisky’s jail experience, which has captivated public attention for months.
The drama began when an audio recording went viral, in which Bobrisky claimed to have paid off officials from the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) for privileged treatment while incarcerated for naira abuse.
According to the minister, the situation offers a broader insight into the systemic issues within key institutions—a reflection that has spurred national conversations and raised questions about integrity and accountability.
“When you have an institutional problem, you don’t just provide a knee-jerk approach to solving it.
“We set up that committee to look into all the issues, beyond Bobrisky, beyond people absconding – it is a whole institutional issue,” he said.
He believes that the key to preventing future challenges lies in transforming Nigeria’s institutions laying a new foundation that will resolve similar issues before they even arise.
“We cannot transfer today’s problem to the future,” he said.
