The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Nasarawa State has set the stage for a high-stakes showdown, rallying workers for an impending indefinite strike over the government’s failure to implement the new National Minimum Wage.
In a telephone conversation on the 1st of December, 2024, the state NLC Chairman, Comrade Ismaila Okoh, voiced mounting frustration with the government’s inertia, despite a series of meetings chaired by Deputy Governor Dr. Emmanuel Akabe.
Okoh disclosed that although the government had verbally committed to a minimum wage of ₦70,500, a formal agreement detailing payment terms remains unsigned.
“All affiliate unions have been briefed and directed to prepare for industrial action if the government does not implement the new minimum wage by December 1, 2024,” Okoh declared, emphasizing the workers’ unwavering resolve to see the wage, endorsed by President Bola Tinubu, fully realized.
In a counterstatement, Deputy Governor Akabe assured that the government is resolute in its commitment to pay the ₦70,500 minimum wage starting December 2024. He further revealed that discussions on salary adjustments to align with the new structure are nearing completion.
