The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has successfully uncovered an illegal production site for counterfeit alcoholic beverages on Lagos Island, according to a statement released by the agency on Monday.
Acting on a tip-off, NAFDAC operatives raided a shop on Offin Road in the Balogun area of Lagos Island, which had been repurposed for the production and packaging of fake alcoholic drinks.
During the operation, a wide range of counterfeit alcohol products were destroyed on-site, and a variety of packaging materials, empty bottles, and repackaged drinks were confiscated.
The estimated value of the destroyed and seized goods exceeds N30 million.
The agency has already initiated further investigations into the matter, with plans to identify those responsible for the illegal operation.
NAFDAC’s Director-General, who highlighted the seriousness of this operation, emphasized the importance of consumers purchasing alcoholic beverages only from reputable sources.
The agency also urged the public to report any suspicious products or activities to the nearest NAFDAC office to help combat the proliferation of counterfeit goods.
This discovery is part of a series of actions taken by NAFDAC in recent weeks to combat the spread of counterfeit goods.
Just last month, NAFDAC operatives uncovered another illegal alcohol packaging operation at the Article Market in the Abule-Osun area of Lagos, where over 50,000 counterfeit branded labels and packaging materials, worth approximately N2 billion, were seized.
In addition to these operations, NAFDAC also uncovered a warehouse in Oke-Afa, Okota, Lagos, that was stocked with unregistered and expired supermarket items, continuing the agency’s crackdown on illegal and unsafe consumer goods in the market.
