Sanwo-Olu Signs Electricity Bill into Law for Steady Power Supply

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Tuesday officially signed the Lagos Electricity Bill into law, marking a significant step toward ensuring steady power supply for residents.

The signing ceremony, held at Lagos House in Alausa, Ikeja, was attended by Deputy Governor Kadri Hamzat, members of the State Assembly, and the State Executive Council.

Governor Sanwo-Olu praised the Lagos State House of Assembly for swiftly passing the bill, emphasising that it will improve the socio-economic conditions of citizens.

He revealed that the bill, which has been in development for years, will guarantee reliable electricity supply across the state.

State Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Biodun Ogunleye, highlighted the law’s provisions for an additional grid and the establishment of a Host Community Development Trust Fund to promote the development of power plants.

“There will now be regular power supply. Host community development Trust fund, which will provide opportunities for communities to develop power plant,” Ogunleye stated.

He added that the law represents a significant milestone in addressing Lagos’s longstanding energy challenges and will pave the way for uninterrupted power supply.

The Lagos State Electricity Law 2024 aims to drive economic growth, industrialisation, and environmental sustainability by ensuring reliable, affordable electricity access for all citizens.

It also promotes the use of renewable energy, energy efficiency, and investment in the power sector, fostering competition and innovation.

Additionally, the law seeks to electrify underserved areas, contributing to the state’s overall sustainable development.
