Ex-Belgian Star Radja Nainggolan Arrested in Cocaine Trafficking Investigation

Former Belgian international footballer Radja Nainggolan was arrested on Monday in connection with a cocaine trafficking investigation centered on the port of Antwerp, according to the Brussels prosecutor’s office.

Authorities confirmed that Nainggolan, 36, was among several suspects detained following a series of early-morning raids conducted across Belgium.

“The investigation concerns alleged facts of importation of cocaine from South America to Europe, via the port of Antwerp, and its redistribution in Belgium,” prosecutors said in a statement.

Further details of the investigation remain undisclosed at this time.

Nainggolan, who was born in Antwerp, recently came out of retirement to join Belgian second-tier side Lokeren, marking the latest chapter in a career that saw him play 30 matches and score six goals for the Belgian national team.

The tattooed midfielder, known for his dynamic style on the pitch and controversial antics off it, made his Lokeren debut over the weekend, scoring a goal in a 1-1 draw against K. Lierse.

Nainggolan previously played for top Italian clubs including Roma, Inter Milan, and Cagliari before returning to Belgium in 2021 to join Royal Antwerp.

His time there was marred by disciplinary issues, including a suspension for smoking an electronic cigarette on the bench, leading to his departure in early 2023.

This latest arrest marks a serious turn in the former footballer’s controversial off-field legacy.

As the investigation unfolds, more details are expected to emerge regarding his alleged involvement in the cocaine trafficking operation.
