The Commissioner of Police, Cross River State Command, CP Gyogon Grimah, has issued a stern warning to his personnel, prohibiting them from extorting motorists in the state as they enforce the directive on Third Party Insurance registration.
He emphasized that officers must uphold professionalism and respect the rights of vehicle owners.
In a statement signed by the State Command’s Public Relations Officer, Irene Ugbo, Grimah cautioned officers involved in the enforcement to maintain integrity, avoid complacency, and refrain from rights violations. He urged them to be “fair and firm” in their duties while shunning any form of extortion, reminding them that such misconduct would not be tolerated.
“Any errant officers found wanting will face severe sanctions,” he warned.
His directive aligns with the order from the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, instructing all state commands to enforce third-party vehicle insurance compliance nationwide.
Grimah also advised vehicle owners to ensure they have genuine third-party insurance to prevent any form of embarrassment.
He revealed that enforcement commenced in the state on the 1st of February, 2025, and urged motorists to obtain their policies only from licensed insurance providers authorized by the National Insurance Commission.
Highlighting the importance of the policy, the Commissioner explained that it facilitates the protection of innocent third parties in accidents, ensuring financial recovery and compensation for damages, injuries, or even loss of life.
As enforcement continues, the Command has urged uninsured vehicle owners to regularize their status immediately to avoid facing penalties.
“Residents are hereby notified that the exercise will continue throughout the state until all vehicle owners adhere to the policy.”
