The Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) of the Lagos All Progressives Congress (APC) is holding an emergency meeting today (Monday) to address the deepening leadership crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly.

The meeting, taking place at Lagos House, Marina, the official residence of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, comes just two weeks after a similar gathering by the council, which is the party’s highest decision-making body in the state.

The GAC, led by Pa Tajudeen Olusi, has President Bola Tinubu as its lifetime patron.

Simultaneously, Governor Sanwo-Olu is also expected to discuss the Assembly crisis at the weekly Executive Council meeting, as efforts continue to resolve the impasse.

The crisis erupted on January 13, 2025, when 32 out of 40 lawmakers voted to remove Speaker Mudashiru Obasa in absentia over allegations of financial misappropriation, misconduct, and high-handedness.

His former deputy, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, was immediately installed as Speaker, sparking mixed reactions within the party and the public.

Obasa’s removal has since deepened divisions within the GAC. Some members have questioned the legality of the process, while others have defended the Assembly’s actions.

Muraina Taiwo, a GAC member from Isolo Constituency, recently criticised the lawmakers for reconvening during recess to oust Obasa. Meanwhile, Musiliu Obanikoro and Senator Anthony Adefuye have also expressed conflicting views.

While Adefuye insisted Obasa’s removal was illegal, Obanikoro dismissed his claims, calling them “careless.”
