The Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has urged the National Assembly to take immediate legislative action towards the creation of five additional states in Nigeria. The call aims to rectify regional imbalances in the country’s six geopolitical zones and ensure fairness in the distribution of resources and opportunities.
In a statement signed by its Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Comrade James Ezema, the CNPP stressed the importance of equity in democratic governance, stating that “Democracy does not support injustice. The basic principles of democracy derive from free, fair, just, and equitable distribution of resources, and the rule of law.”
The organization emphasized that correcting the current imbalance in state distribution would enhance national unity, stability, and progress.
According to the CNPP, the present structure sees the North Central and North West zones having seven states each, while the South West, North East, and South-South zones have six states each. The South East region, however, lags behind with only five states. The CNPP, therefore, proposes the creation of:
One additional state each for the South West, North East, and South-South zones.
Two additional states for the South East zone to bring it at par with others.
The CNPP argues that this realignment would create a fairer political landscape and allow every region an equal opportunity to contribute to Nigeria’s development.
“Once this is achieved, the National Assembly can consider creating additional states across all six geopolitical zones based on economic viability and other relevant factors,” the statement read.

The political body reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for good governance, transparency, and accountability in Nigeria. It called on lawmakers to prioritize the issue in the interest of national cohesion and socio-economic balance.
“We urge the National Assembly to take this matter seriously and work towards creating a more just and equitable society for all Nigerians,” the CNPP stated.
As the umbrella organization for all registered political parties and political associations in Nigeria, the CNPP pledged to continue promoting the principles of democracy and ensuring that the rights and interests of all Nigerians are safeguarded.
