The long-awaited results of the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for private candidates, second series, have finally been released by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
However, amid the excitement, 2,577 candidates have had their results withheld over allegations of examination malpractice.
In a statement issued on the 16th of February, 2025, WAEC’s Acting Public Affairs Officer, Moyosola Adesina, confirmed the development. She revealed that a total of 65,023 candidates sat for the examination in Nigeria, which was conducted across various centres between the 25th October and the 20th of December, 2024.
Encouragingly, 34,878 candidates accounting for 53.64% achieved credit and above in at least five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
Adesina urged candidates to check their results via www.waecdirect.org before proceeding to access digital copies of their certificates at www.waec.org.
For those whose results were withheld, she directed them to the WAEC Notice of Examination Malpractice Portal at https://waecinternational.org/complaints to respond to the allegations against them.
“Reported cases will be investigated, including evidence gathered and candidates’ representations submitted. Findings will be reviewed by the Council’s relevant Committee for a final decision. The Committee’s decisions will be communicated directly to the affected candidates,” Adesina stated.
Breaking down the demographics of successful candidates, WAEC disclosed that 16,886 (48.41%) were male, while 17,992 (51.58%) were female.
The results also showed a significant improvement compared to previous years, as 42.16% in 2022 and 44.29% in 2023 obtained credit and above in at least five subjects, including English and Mathematics.

Additionally, 67.55% (43,923 candidates) secured credit and above in at least five subjects, regardless of English Language or Mathematics.
The marking of scripts took place across five designated centres—Lagos, Ibadan, Benin, Enugu, and Kaduna—between the 15th of January and the 4th of February, 2025.
As candidates eagerly check their results, WAEC’s firm stance on examination malpractice remains evident, reinforcing the Council’s commitment to upholding academic integrity.
