The Edo House of Assembly passed the State Kidnapping Prohibition Law 2025 on Tuesday, February 18, introducing a death penalty for offenders.

Majority Leader Charity Aiguobarueghian initiated the motion, which was seconded by Minority Leader Henry Okaka, representing Owan East. The motion led to a clause-by-clause review of the bill.

During the review, lawmakers amended the 2013 law, replacing the previous life imprisonment penalty with the death sentence for those convicted of kidnapping.

The law also continues to allow for the confiscation of property used in kidnapping crimes.
