Atalanta’s UEFA Champions League campaign came to a disappointing end after suffering a 3-1 defeat at home to Club Brugge, sealing a 5-2 aggregate loss in their knockout tie.
Nigerian duo Ademola Lookman and Rafael Onyedika were on opposite sides as the Belgian club secured a historic qualification at the Gewiss Stadium.
Club Brugge wasted no time stamping their authority on the game, racing to a 3-0 lead in the first half.
Talbi C. opened the scoring in the 3rd minute before doubling his tally in the 27th minute.
Jutgla F. then delivered a hammer blow to the hosts with a goal in stoppage time (45+3), effectively putting Atalanta’s chances of qualification on the ropes.
Gian Piero Gasperini’s men came out in the second half with a renewed sense of urgency, introducing Lookman after the break in hopes of sparking a comeback.
The Nigerian forward, making his return from a knee injury that had sidelined him for six games, made an immediate impact by scoring just 30 seconds after his introduction in the 46th minute.

However, his efforts to inspire a turnaround suffered a major setback when he missed a penalty in the 54th minute, a moment that could have shifted the momentum in Atalanta’s favor.
Despite pressing for more goals, the Europa League champions failed to break down a resolute Club Brugge defense, who held on to their lead and confirmed their place in the next round.
With this defeat, Atalanta bow out of the Champions League, while Club Brugge, spearheaded by Onyedika, march on in their European adventure.
