Atalanta Co-Owner Acknowledges Gasperini’s ‘Mistake’ in Criticism of Lookman

Atalanta co-owner Stephen Pagliuca has admitted that head coach Gian Piero Gasperini made an error in publicly criticizing Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman but reaffirmed his faith in the manager’s abilities.

The controversy erupted after Gasperini condemned Lookman’s missed penalty against Club Brugge in the Champions League, labeling him “one of the worst” penalty takers.

His remarks sparked backlash among fans and analysts.

Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport, Pagliuca attempted to calm tensions, emphasizing the club’s collective approach to challenges.

“We want to move past this situation, and I believe we have, especially after the 5-0 win against Empoli,” Pagliuca told Football Italia on Tuesday.

He acknowledged Gasperini’s mistake, stressing Atalanta’s culture of shared responsibility.

“We love the passion that drives these games. Gasperini is a great coach, but he was wrong to single out an individual player. At Atalanta, we face setbacks together and focus on improvement,” he said.

Pagliuca also praised Lookman’s impact, noting that Atalanta’s strong season is a result of collective effort.

“The players have been outstanding—Lookman, De Ketelaere, and the entire squad. We wouldn’t be where we are without their contributions,” he added.

Gasperini’s future at Atalanta remains uncertain, with the 66-year-old stating he will not renew his contract.

While his current deal runs until 2026, he could leave as early as the end of the season.
