Lagos Assembly Declares Obasa’s Plenary ‘Unconstitutional’, Reaffirms Meranda’s Leadership

The Lagos State House of Assembly has strongly condemned the actions of ousted Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, who stormed the Assembly complex on Thursday and attempted to reclaim his position.

Obasa, accompanied by his security aides, entered the Speaker’s Office and later presided over a four-member parliamentary sitting. His move followed the withdrawal of security details assigned to Speaker Mojisola Meranda.

In a statement on Friday, February 28, Assembly spokesman Steve Ogundipe described Obasa’s actions as an “unsanctioned attempt to convene a plenary session” and an invasion of the House.

The Lagos State House of Assembly wishes to bring to the attention of Lagosians, Nigerians, and the global community an incident that occurred on Thursday, involving an unsanctioned attempt to convene a plenary session by the former Speaker, Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, alongside three members,” the statement read.

It emphasised that Obasa’s session lacked legitimacy, as it failed to meet the necessary procedural requirements.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the rules governing plenary sessions of the House are clear. A valid sitting requires a formal notice to all members, the presence of a quorum, an approved agenda, and the mace—an essential symbol of legislative authority.

“None of these procedural requirements was met during the purported session, with only 5 out of 40 members present, rendering it unconstitutional and without legislative effect.”

The Assembly reaffirmed its commitment to upholding democratic principles and maintaining the integrity of the legislature.

“It also dismissed speculation about Meranda’s resignation, insisting she remains Speaker with the backing of the majority.

“Furthermore, we reaffirm our unwavering support for the leadership of the Speaker, Mrs. Mojisola Meranda, who continues to demonstrate dedication to the service of Lagosians.

“Any speculation suggesting her resignation is entirely unfounded. She remains firmly in office and enjoys the confidence and support of 36 colleagues.”

The House pledged to work alongside the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership in resolving the crisis and assured Lagosians that governance would not be disrupted.
