Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is set to meet with US President Donald Trump on the 28th of February, 2025, sealing a critical minerals deal as Kyiv scrambles to reinforce its alliance with Washington in the face of a shifting geopolitical landscape.
This meeting comes at a time when the US, under Trump’s leadership, is recalibrating its stance on the Russian invasion, marking a stark departure from its previous punitive policies toward Moscow.
For Zelenskyy, the atmosphere in Washington is now noticeably different. Trump has repeatedly expressed his intention to swiftly de-escalate the war, mend relations with Russia, and reevaluate US financial commitments to Ukraine’s defense.
His less enthusiastic approach to European security a cornerstone of American foreign policy since World War II has rattled the region, raising concerns that Kyiv might be cornered into an unfavorable peace settlement.
Sources reveal that the much-anticipated minerals agreement, finalized after intense negotiations, grants the US access to Ukraine’s vast mineral resources. However, it falls short of securing American military guarantees, a bitter pill for Kyiv.
A report from the Center for Strategic and International Studies last year highlighted that approximately two-thirds of the US funds allocated for Ukraine were actually spent domestically.

Meanwhile, tensions between Trump and Zelenskyy have played out on the global stage, with Trump openly criticizing the Ukrainian leader’s war strategy, labeling him a dictator, and pressuring him to accept the minerals deal.
Yet, in a surprising turn of events, Trump distanced himself from these remarks during a press conference alongside visiting British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on the 27th of February, 2025.
“Did I say that? I can’t believe I said that,” Trump remarked when questioned about his previous statements. He went on to express anticipation for his meeting with Zelenskyy, commending Ukraine’s military for its resilience and bravery.
As the two leaders prepare to sit down, the world watches closely will this meeting mark a renewed partnership or a reluctant truce dictated by shifting priorities?
