Atiku Calls for Probe Into Akpabio’s Harassment Allegations by Natasha

Former Vice President and 2023 PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has called on President Bola Tinubu and the Senate to seriously address allegations that Senate President Godswill Akpabio engaged in sexual harassment, intimidation, and mistreatment, as alleged by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central.

In a statement released on Friday, February 28, Atiku voiced deep concern over the claims, insisting that they must be subjected to a thorough, unbiased, and transparent investigation.

He stated, “The Nigerian Senate represents the voice of the people. Those who serve in it—especially its leadership—must uphold the highest standards of integrity, dignity, and respect for the offices they hold and for the citizens they serve.”

Atiku emphasised that, as the third most powerful figure in the country, the Senate President is expected to demonstrate impeccable character.

He argued that sexual harassment in the workplace significantly hampers the progress of women and, consequently, national development.

“At a time when only four women serve in the Senate, it is imperative to foster an environment where female legislators can work without fear of harassment or intimidation,” Atiku remarked.

He further urged President Tinubu and Senate leadership to ensure that an independent and credible investigation is conducted, noting that the outcome will send a powerful message about Nigeria’s dedication to justice, accountability, and gender inclusivity in governance.

“This moment demands careful and principled action to uphold the integrity of our institutions and ensure that every Nigerian, regardless of gender, is treated with dignity and respect,” he added.

Recall, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan had alleged that she was subjected to harassment and intimidation in the Senate after refusing Akpabio’s advances, a claim that has ignited widespread debate and calls for a formal inquiry.
