Heavy Security as Lagos Lawmakers Hold Plenary

Armed security personnel have tightened their grip on the Lagos State House of Assembly complex in Alausa, Ikeja, as lawmakers prepare for an emergency plenary on Monday, March 3, 2025, amid a tense political atmosphere.

As early as 7 a.m., the already heightened security presence in the area over the past two weeks was further reinforced, with officers strategically positioned around the complex.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that Speaker Mojisola Meranda may step down to allow for the emergence of a new Speaker, aligning with a zoning arrangement favouring candidates from the West zone.

Meanwhile, heavily armed operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) and the state police command have taken up strategic positions around the Assembly, subjecting all visitors, including staff, to rigorous screening before granting access.

Journalists remain outside the complex, closely monitored by a combined security team comprising police officers, civil defence personnel, and Lagos State Neighbourhood Security Corps operatives.

Police have also barricaded key roads leading to the Assembly, including Mobolaji Johnson Avenue and the main entrance.

As of midday, some lawmakers, including Meranda, had arrived for the plenary, scheduled to commence at 1 pm.
