Tension in Rivers: Fubara Defies Assembly’s Budget Ultimatum, Cites Legal Hurdles

The Rivers State Government has responded to the 48-hour ultimatum issued by the Martin Amaewule-led Rivers State House of Assembly demanding the presentation of the 2025 budget.

In a letter dated March 5, 2025, signed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Chief Dr. Tammy Wenike Danagogo, the government stated that it only became aware of the Assembly’s resolution through social media speculation as no official correspondence had been received.

The letter, addressed to the Speaker, reads in part:

“As at the close of work on Tuesday, 4th March, 2025, we are yet to receive the said letter. Neither the office of the Governor, nor the Deputy Governor’s office, nor the office of the Accountant-General of the State has received the said letter.”

It further emphasized Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s commitment to obeying the Supreme Court’s judgement regarding the political crisis in the state, despite his personal reservations.

The letter reassured the public that the government is in contact with its legal team and will act accordingly once the certified true copy of the Supreme Court judgement is received.
