Gospel singer Mercy Chinwo has filed a defamation lawsuit against social media personality VeryDarkMan (VDM) over allegations he made regarding her former record label.
In a suit dated Monday, March 3, Chinwo’s legal representative, Pelumi Olajengbesi, accused VDM of spreading “libelous, malicious, spiteful, malevolent, and grossly defamatory” statements that damaged the singer’s reputation.
The controversy began after VDM posted a series of videos on Instagram in February, alleging that Chinwo misappropriated funds from her performances without remitting them to her previous label, EeZee Concept, owned by Ezekiel Onyedikachukwu.
He also accused her of breaching contractual agreements before leaving the label.
Olajengbesi argued that VDM had no direct involvement in the dispute and misrepresented the facts.
“The claimant avers that she has neither had any form of relationship with the defendant nor was the defendant involved in the issue between the claimant and EeZee T in any material particular,” he stated.

He further claimed that VDM’s comments misled the public. “The claimant avers that the statements which the defendant made in the videos he published on his Instagram page were as though the defendant was personally involved in the issues between the claimant and EeZee T.
“However, these statements were not only false but damning and injurious to the claimant’s public image and reputation,” Olajengbesi added.
According to court filings, Chinwo is seeking ₦1 billion in general damages, ₦100 million in punitive and aggravated damages, and ₦25 million to cover legal expenses.
She also wants the court to mandate VDM to take down the alleged defamatory content, issue a public apology, and publish corrections in four national newspapers for two weeks.
Chinwo’s legal battle with EeZee Concept began after her departure from the label. She accused Onyedikachukwu of withholding approximately $345,000 from her digital revenue and event proceeds.
While he denied any wrongdoing, Chinwo insisted she was defrauded. In response, the label head requested a financial audit.
Meanwhile, on February 17, a federal high court in Lagos upheld an arrest warrant against Onyedikachukwu and set March 6 as the next hearing date.
