Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has described ex-Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) as a positive move.
El-Rufai recently announced his departure from the APC, citing the SDP as a more suitable platform for his political future.
Reacting to the development on Politics Today on Channels TV, Sani asserted that El-Rufai’s exit was long overdue, arguing that his leadership had significantly weakened the APC’s standing in Kaduna State.

“For those of us from Kaduna, it is good riddance because he was a liability to the party,” Sani said. “In 2015, APC had two senators in the state; by 2023, all three senatorial districts had been taken over by the PDP. Out of the 14 House of Representatives seats, nine went to the PDP, two to Labour Party, and only three to the APC. Even under his governorship, the APC lost the presidential election in Kaduna.”
Sani added that El-Rufai’s departure gives the state’s current APC leadership a chance to reconnect with the people and rebuild the party ahead of future elections.
