Drunk Policeman Goes on Shooting Spree in Niger, Kills Sleeping Man

A tragic incident has left a resident of Angwan-Kaje, Chanchaga Local Government Area, dead after a police officer allegedly embarked on a drunken shooting spree in the early hours of Monday, March 10, 2025.

The Niger State Police Command has launched an investigation into the incident and vowed to bring the officer involved to justice.

According to reports from multiple sources, the officer, attached to the Maitumbi Police Station, is alleged to have consumed an excessive amount of alcohol before indiscriminately firing his rifle.

One resident, identified as Sani, was fatally shot while asleep. A tea seller, known as Mai Shayi, narrowly escaped after the officer allegedly attempted to shoot him as well. Eyewitnesses at the scene reported finding bullet shells, corroborating the accounts of the shooting.

Commissioner of Police, Shuwala Danmamman, has ordered a full-scale investigation into the incident and directed the Divisional Police Officer of Maitumbi to identify and apprehend the officer responsible.

“The command received the complaint of the alleged shooting, which occurred around 3 am on March 10, 2025, at Angwan-Kaje, Maitumbi, Minna,” stated Wasiu Abiodun, spokesman for the Niger State Police Command.

“The Commissioner of Police has directed the DPO Maitumbi to investigate and identify the officer responsible for the act for further necessary action.”

This tragic event has sparked outrage and concern within the community, highlighting the serious consequences of alcohol abuse and misuse of firearms by law enforcement officers.

The Niger State Police Command has assured the public that they will take decisive action and provide updates on the investigation’s progress.
