Gunmen Ravage Zamfara Communities, Leaving Death, Despair

Between the 20th and 21st of March, 2025, Zamfara State was plunged into turmoil as multiple lives were lost, several individuals sustained injuries, and many were forced to abandon their homes in the wake of relentless violence sweeping through various communities.

The onslaught, reportedly orchestrated by armed bandits, wreaked havoc across Talata-Mafara, Bukkuyum, and Kaura-Namoda Local Government Areas (LGAs), according to security analyst Zagazola Makama, who detailed the events in a post on X, on the 21st of March, 2025.

The nightmare began in Tudun-Biri village, Talata-Mafara LGA, when gunmen descended upon a Fulani settlement at approximately 10:30 a.m. on the 20th of March.

Their attack was swift and ruthless, houses were set ablaze, and in the ensuing chaos, one person lost their life while others scrambled for safety.

“Witnesses said the assailants arrived in large numbers, torching huts and destroying properties, leaving the community in chaos. Many of the displaced residents are now seeking refuge in nearby villages.”

As the day wore on, violence flared again. By 6:32 p.m., a Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) camp in Gurusu, Bukkuyum LGA, came under siege. Armed men stormed the camp, triggering a fierce gun battle as the vigilantes fought back with all they had.

“Three CJTF operatives and three community members were killed,” a security source disclosed. “One CJTF member was abducted, while four others sustained gunshot wounds.”

Despite the losses, the attackers were eventually forced to retreat into the forest, leaving behind a community on edge and bracing for the possibility of further bloodshed.

The violence did not end there. As midnight struck on the 21st of March, Gidan Fulani village in Kaura-Namoda LGA became the next target. Armed men swept through the settlement, rustling an unverified number of cattle.

“They fired warning shots into the air to scare people before driving the cattle away,” a resident recounted.

In response, security forces have ramped up efforts to track down the attackers and recover the stolen livestock.

Authorities have also intensified surveillance across the affected areas, while local vigilantes have increased patrols in a desperate bid to prevent further attacks.

Despite the widespread destruction, the Zamfara State Police Command has yet to release an official statement regarding the incidents, leaving many unanswered questions as tension continues to grip the region.
