Labour Party Gears Up for Anambra Election as Litmus Test for 2027

The Labour Party (LP) has set its sights on the upcoming Anambra governorship election as a crucial test of its strength and preparedness ahead of the 2027 general elections.

This was made known by the party’s National Chairman, Julius Abure, during a gathering in Awka, the capital of Anambra State, on Saturday.

The event, organized by the Directorate of Mobilisation and Integration, provided a platform for governorship aspirants to engage with party delegates ahead of the primary election scheduled for next Saturday.

The LP National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, confirmed the development in a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday.

Represented by the party’s national women leader, Mrs. Dudu Manuga, Abure emphasized the importance of unity among aspirants and party members.

He urged contestants to accept the outcome of the primaries and rally behind the eventual candidate to build a formidable front for the November poll.

“We want to use Anambra to test what 2027 will be,” Abure stated. “Labour Party has grown beyond a briefcase party. We are present in all states of Nigeria and Abuja, and we are getting ready not just for Anambra but for the general elections in 2027.”

Abure further urged party members to remain united after the primaries, stating, “After the primary election this Saturday, no one is permitted to be angry. We must all join hands to ensure victory in November. Let us not be weak, let us not bicker, but instead, stand strong together. With unity, nothing is impossible.”

The forum also saw the participation of the two LP governorship aspirants who purchased the party’s nomination forms—Dr. George Moghalu and John Nwosu.

Addressing party members, Moghalu underscored the need to restore public confidence in governance, stating that insecurity and harsh taxation had eroded trust in government institutions.

“People no longer trust the government,” Moghalu said. “Security has collapsed, and thugs are being used to enforce tax collection. If governance is transparent and responsible, citizens will pay their taxes voluntarily, especially with electronic collection systems.”

He also pledged to rebuild Anambra State and bring governance closer to the people if elected.

With the Anambra governorship election seen as a precursor to the 2027 general elections, the Labour Party is intensifying efforts to consolidate its presence across all polling units, ensuring that its grassroots structure remains strong for future contests.
