Edo Gov Transfers Uromi Attack Suspects to Abuja for Interrogation

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has confirmed that 14 individuals arrested in connection with the deadly attack on Kano-bound travellers in Uromi Local Government Area have been transferred to Abuja for further investigation.

The tragic incident, which occurred on Thursday, saw a mob assault a group of hunters who were traveling to Kano for Sallah celebrations.

The attack resulted in multiple fatalities, sparking outrage across the nation.

During a condolence visit to Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin in Abuja on Monday, Okpebholo strongly condemned the attack and reassured the public that those responsible would face justice.

“It’s unfortunate that such an incident happened in our state. We are here to express our deep sadness and assure Nigerians that justice will be served,” Okpebholo stated, as quoted by Ismail Mudashir, media aide to the Deputy Senate President.

He further revealed that President Bola Tinubu has taken a keen interest in the matter, with Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, directing the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Criminal Investigation Department (DIG CID), to oversee the case.

“So far, 14 suspects have been arrested, and they are now being transferred to Abuja for interrogation. Additionally, we have established a committee to support the families of the deceased,” Okpebholo added.

In his response, Jibrin emphasized the need for swift justice, stating that holding the perpetrators accountable would serve as a deterrent to future attacks.

“We cannot undo what has happened, but Nigerians expect justice. You are taking the right steps, and I urge you to ensure that all those responsible for this barbaric act are brought to book,” he said.

Jibrin commended the Edo State government for pledging support to the victims’ families and called for continued efforts to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

“This was a barbaric act, and we must ensure that justice is served so such incidents do not repeat themselves,” he concluded.

The attack in Uromi has sparked national concern, with many calling for increased security measures to prevent further occurrences of mob violence.
