Dead Man’s Testicle Missing, Three Mortuary Attendants Escape Lynching

Tension gripped the Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State on Monday as three mortuary attendants narrowly escaped lynching after a corpse’s missing testicle sparked outrage among local youths.

The incident, which took place at a mortuary situated between Afoukwu and Abayi Okoroato villages along the Aba-Ikot Ekpene highway, resulted in the destruction of the facility by enraged community members.

The deceased’s family had arrived at the mortuary to retrieve the body for burial when one of the relatives insisted on examining it before leaving. Upon undressing the corpse, the family discovered that one of its testicles was missing, prompting an uproar.

Witnesses reported that the revelation triggered immediate chaos as angry youths, who had accompanied the family, descended on the mortuary. Some attempted to seize the attendants, accusing them of organ harvesting. In the ensuing turmoil, the attendants tried to flee but were apprehended by the irate crowd.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as one of total disorder, with the furious mob vandalizing the mortuary building and other property within the premises.

One community member, expressing the general sentiment, said, “People have suspected foul play in this mortuary for a long time. This is an abomination in Igbo land. We cannot allow this evil to continue.”

In the wake of the incident, families who had stored their deceased relatives at the mortuary hurriedly rushed to reclaim them, fearing further tampering.

One such individual, identified as Iheanyi, disclosed that he had removed his brother’s remains to a different facility to prevent any potential desecration.

Security operatives from the Eastern Ngwa Police Division, Umuobiakwa, later arrived at the scene to restore order. Several mortuary attendants were taken into custody for questioning, while investigations into the case were launched.

As of the time of this report, the Abia State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.

Efforts to reach the command’s spokesperson, DSP Maureen Chinaka, were unsuccessful, as calls and messages to her mobile line went unanswered.

This shocking development has reignited concerns over the integrity of some mortuary operators in the region, with residents calling for stricter regulations and monitoring of such facilities to prevent further violations of traditional and ethical standards.
