Trump Threatens to Impose 50% Additional Tariffs on China

President Donald Trump has intensified his trade war with China, warning of an additional 50% tariff on Chinese imports unless Beijing withdraws its planned retaliation. In a strong statement released on April 7, 2025, Trump set a deadline for China to back down, with the U.S. planning to impose the new tariffs on April 9 if China doesn’t reverse its recently announced 34% tariff hike.

The White House confirmed to AFP that the 34% tariff will come into effect on April 9, but Trump’s additional 50% would bring the total extra duties to a staggering 104% on top of the tariffs imposed during his first term.

Trump made his position clear in a Truth Social post, stating: “If China does not withdraw its 34 percent increase above their already long-term trading abuses by tomorrow, April 8, 2025, the United States will impose ADDITIONAL Tariffs on China of 50 percent, effective April 9.”

In response, China has matched the 34% tariff increase, set to take effect on April 10, and imposed export restrictions on rare earth minerals. These minerals are crucial to global supply chains, adding pressure to an already strained relationship.

Trump has also announced that he will terminate ongoing trade discussions with China, stating: “All talks with China concerning their requested meetings with us will be terminated.” However, he added that negotiations with other nations requesting meetings would begin immediately.

The president has continued to accuse China of engaging in “non-monetary tariffs” and “illegal subsidization of companies,” further fueling tensions. In addition, Trump has imposed a 20% tariff on Chinese goods connected to fentanyl trafficking since his return to office.

The escalating rhetoric and the imposition of further tariffs signal a prolonged trade dispute, with the potential for significant economic ramifications if both sides dig in their heels.
