On Thursday afternoon, a sightseeing helicopter crashed into the Hudson River, resulting in the deaths of all six people aboard, including three children.
The crash, which occurred in the waters near Jersey City, prompted a large-scale rescue operation, but efforts to save the victims proved unsuccessful.
Among the deceased were a Spanish family, including two children, and the pilot of the Bell 206 helicopter. Emergency responders, including police and fire department divers, quickly rushed to the scene after the crash.
Four victims were pronounced dead at the scene, and two others were transported to local hospitals, where they later succumbed to their injuries.
“At this time, all six victims have been removed from the water, and tragically, they have all been confirmed deceased,” said New York City Mayor Eric Adams at a press briefing, calling the crash “heartbreaking and tragic.”
While the identities of the victims have not yet been officially released, media reports suggest that Agustin Escobar, an executive from Siemens, was among those on board.
The crash took place just after 3 p.m. as the helicopter departed from Manhattan’s Skyport, heading south along the shoreline before turning back toward downtown.
Witnesses reported seeing the rotor blade “shatter in the sky,” followed by the helicopter spiraling out of control before crashing into the water.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).
Local authorities, including the NYPD and FDNY, responded swiftly to the disaster, deploying divers and rescue vessels to recover the wreckage.
The helicopter’s landing skids were visible in the river as emergency crews worked to pull the victims from the water.
