Tragedy Strikes Lagos: NEMA Confirms 5 Dead, 20 Injured in Building Collapse

The death toll from the tragic collapse of a three-storey building in Lagos’ Ojodu Berger area has risen to five, with 20 survivors rescued from the wreckage so far.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed these figures on the 20th of April, 2025.

Ibrahim Farinloye, NEMA’s South-West Territorial Coordinator, revealed that the survivors included nine men and one woman.

“Sadly, five bodies were recovered from the site three adult females and two adult males,” Farinloye said.

Earlier, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) had reported one fatality during the initial rescue on the 19th of April, but by the 20th of April, they confirmed the discovery of four additional victims.

Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary at LASEMA, mentioned that the recovered bodies had been transported to the morgue, while emergency teams continued their search efforts at the site.

“All first responders are still on-site to sustain the operation,” he said. “We will provide updates as the situation unfolds.”

In contrast, the Lagos State Police Command released differing information. Police spokesperson CSP Benjamin Hundeyin reported, “Twenty-three rescued, two dead.”

As the search and rescue operations persist, there are still discrepancies in the casualty numbers provided by different agencies, with further updates expected.
