Rüdiger Out 8 Weeks After Surgery, Faces Lengthy Ban

Real Madrid’s title hopes have taken a significant hit with confirmation that Antonio Rüdiger will be sidelined for up to two months following knee surgery—and the German defender could also be facing a lengthy suspension for an explosive incident during Saturday’s Copa del Rey final.

Rüdiger, 32, underwent an operation on Tuesday to repair a tear in the outer meniscus of his left knee, the club announced.

While Madrid offered no formal timeline, Spanish outlets report a six-to-eight-week recovery period, effectively ruling him out of the remainder of the La Liga campaign.

The injury adds insult to an already painful night for Rüdiger and Real Madrid.

During the dramatic 3–2 extra-time defeat to arch-rivals Barcelona in Seville, the centre-back was shown a red card after being substituted, allegedly for hurling an object toward the match official in a fit of rage.

The outburst could result in a ban ranging from four to 12 matches, pending disciplinary review.

With five games left in the league and Madrid trailing leaders Barcelona by four points, the May 11 clash at the Olympic Stadium could decide the title—yet Los Blancos will now face that challenge without one of their most physical and experienced defenders.

The incident caps a tumultuous week for Rüdiger, who had previously played a key role in Real’s defensive line and was even seen celebrating Celta Vigo’s own goal during a 4–0 victory at the Santiago Bernabéu in March.

His passion and intensity are well known—but now, they may have cost Madrid dearly.

Still, there’s hope he might return in time for Real’s summer Club World Cup campaign, set to kick off on June 14 in the United States.

For now, though, both club and player face a tense wait as disciplinary proceedings begin.
