FIFA Relegates Kenyan Club Muhoroni Youth Over Match-Fixing Scandal

In another blow to the integrity of Kenyan football, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) on Friday confirmed the relegation of Muhoroni Youth FC after the club was found guilty of match manipulation by world football governing body FIFA.

In a decision released Friday, FIFA announced that Muhoroni Youth, a second-tier side competing in the FKF National Super League, had engaged in activities related to the manipulation of football matches and competitions.

As a result, the club’s senior team has been expelled from the league and relegated to the third-tier Division One League ahead of the 2025–2026 season.

“The FKF fully supports FIFA’s decision,” the federation said in a statement. “We reiterate our zero-tolerance stance on match-fixing and all forms of manipulation that threaten the integrity of the game.”

The ruling marks the latest chapter in a series of match-fixing scandals that have rocked Kenyan football.

Just weeks earlier, former national team goalkeeper Patrick Matasi was suspended over allegations he conspired to manipulate the outcome of a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Cameroon, a match Kenya lost 4-1 in Yaounde last year — a result that severely damaged the Harambee Stars’ chances of reaching the finals in Morocco this December.

The country has a troubled history with match-fixing. In 2020, FIFA banned four Kenya-based players — including one for life — for their role in an international match-fixing conspiracy.

The fallout also saw five Kenyan referees suspended.

The Kenya Institute of Public Policy Research and Analysis, a government-backed think tank, has warned that match-fixing has deeply infiltrated football in the country, stretching from grassroots tournaments to the top professional leagues.

As the FKF vows to clean up the sport, the relegation of Muhoroni Youth signals that global football authorities are watching — and taking action.
