Governors Hyacinth Alia of Benue and Dauda Lawal of Zamfara, alongside their state Houses of Assembly, have been summoned to face the House of Representatives Committee on Public Petitions on Thursday, the 8th of May, 2025.
Newsmen learned that the invitation stems from mounting insecurity in both states. A civil rights group, Guardians of Democracy and Rule of Law, triggered the action with a petition to the House, raising concerns over the deteriorating security conditions.
The Committee wants the executive and legislative arms of both states to justify why the House of Representatives shouldn’t take over their constitutional duties.

The development was confirmed in a statement issued by Chooks Oko, Head of Media for the House Committee on Public Petitions.
The statement revealed that the summon “is sequel to a petition written by a civil rights organisation, Guardians of Democracy and Rule of Law urging the House to take over the functions of the two Houses of Assembly.”
Committee Chairman Mike Etaba, who personally signed the summons, stressed that the parties involved were already familiar with the situation.
Quoting him: “Ours is to ensure that the rule of law is upheld at all times. The parties have a wonderful opportunity to state their cases clearly so that Nigerians can know what is going on. Anarchy would never be given any space in our polity.”
