Jonathan Pays Tribute to Yar’Adua, 15 Years After Late President’s Passing

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has paid glowing tribute to the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, describing him as a “patriot and servant leader” whose legacy remains a guiding light for good governance in Nigeria.

In a heartfelt message shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Monday, Jonathan reflected on Yar’Adua’s enduring legacy, 15 years after the latter’s death while in office. He praised Yar’Adua’s leadership as defined by selflessness, patriotism, and a firm commitment to justice and the rule of law.

“Fifteen years ago, our nation lost a patriot. A servant leader, with whom I shared a common vision for a united, inclusive and just nation,” Jonathan wrote.

“President Yar’Adua’s life was defined by service and selflessness. His account of stewardship, whether as a teacher, governor or president, was guided by hard work, patriotism, accountability, commitment to justice and adherence to the rule of law.”

Jonathan, who served as Yar’Adua’s vice president before assuming the presidency following Yar’Adua’s death in 2010, described the late leader as a unifying force whose short tenure was nonetheless impactful.

“His tenure, although short, was impactful and progressive — a moment we remember for selfless service and deep commitment to the public good,” Jonathan said.

He further noted that Yar’Adua’s administration was marked by genuine efforts to reconcile Nigerians, foster unity, and lay the foundation for a more inclusive democracy.

“Today, I celebrate my friend, brother, and boss for his exemplary and sacrificial life of service, his genuine efforts in nation building, and his dedication to fostering an inclusive democracy anchored on justice, equity and national unity,” he added.

President Yar’Adua died on May 5, 2010, after a protracted illness. He is widely remembered for initiating the Niger Delta Amnesty Programme and for acknowledging flaws in the electoral system, which he pledged to reform — actions that earned him widespread respect even after his death.

Jonathan’s tribute has rekindled public admiration for Yar’Adua’s calm leadership style and principled governance, especially at a time when Nigerians continue to yearn for accountable and inclusive leadership.
