Awoniyi Out of Coma, Recovering After Emergency Abdominal Surgery

Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi is now awake and recovering in hospital after undergoing emergency surgery following a collision with the goalpost during Sunday’s match against Leicester City.

The Nigerian international suffered an abdominal injury in the incident and was placed in a medically induced coma to control movement and stabilise his heart rate, although the injury was not considered life-threatening.

Doctors completed the second stage of the procedure on Wednesday, May 14, according to Mail Online, and Awoniyi is said to be recuperating steadily, surrounded by family.

Nottingham Forest confirmed the development and defended club owner Evangelos Marinakis, who made headlines after storming onto the pitch post-match.

In a statement, the club said Marinakis’s reaction was due to the seriousness of Awoniyi’s condition and dismissed reports that he had confronted manager Nuno Espírito Santo, calling them “fake news.”
