American R&B star Chris Brown is set to appear before a UK court on Friday following his arrest and formal charge in connection with an alleged nightclub assault in London last year.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed that the 36-year-old singer, known for chart-topping hits such as “Kiss Kiss” and “Forever,” was taken into custody during the early hours of Thursday at the Lowry Hotel in Manchester. His arrest relates to an incident that occurred on February 19, 2023, at a venue in Hanover Square, central London.

Brown has been charged with “grievous bodily harm with intent” for allegedly attacking music producer Abe Diaw with a bottle at Tape, a high-profile nightclub in London’s Mayfair district. He is scheduled to appear before a Manchester court at 10:00 a.m. on Friday.

At the time of the alleged assault, Brown was in the United Kingdom as part of his 2023 tour. Media reports suggest that he arrived in Manchester via private jet on Wednesday afternoon before being detained by law enforcement.

The two-time Grammy Award winner has a long history of legal controversies. Most notably, he was convicted in 2009 for assaulting then-girlfriend and global pop icon Rihanna, an incident that overshadowed his career at its peak. Subsequent years saw Brown involved in several other legal cases, including an altercation with Drake’s entourage in 2012, a misdemeanor assault conviction in Washington in 2014, and arrests linked to firearm and battery allegations.

Despite a career marred by legal troubles, Brown has maintained a strong global fan base, with millions of albums sold and multiple international tours. He is currently scheduled to begin a world tour next month, which includes several planned performances in the UK in June and July—though the latest developments may cast uncertainty on those dates.

The Metropolitan Police stated that Brown remains in custody pending his court appearance. Further details surrounding the case and potential legal consequences are expected to emerge during Friday’s proceedings.
