Ogazi Makes History, Wins First SEC 400m Gold for Alabama in 14 Years

Nigeria’s Paris 2024 finalist, Samuel Ogazi, etched his name into the history books on Saturday as he stormed to victory in the Men’s 400m final at the SEC Outdoor Championships, becoming the first athlete in 14 years to win the title for the University of Alabama.

Ogazi delivered a commanding performance, clocking 45.04 seconds to clinch the gold medal and break Alabama’s long wait for glory in the one-lap event.

He fended off strong competition from Josiah Wrice, who took silver in 45.40s, and Ervin Pearson, who settled for bronze in 45.58s.

The win marks a significant milestone for both Ogazi and Alabama Track & Field, as the last time an Alabama athlete claimed the 400m title at the SEC Outdoors was in 2010.

Ogazi’s victory continues his fine form following his appearance in the 400m final at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where he gained global attention as one of the sport’s rising stars.

Reacting after the race, Alabama coaches and fans lauded the 20-year-old’s performance, calling it a defining moment for the Crimson Tide’s sprint program.

Ogazi is now firmly positioned as a key contender in the upcoming NCAA Championships, with his sights also set on the World Championships later this year.
