During the 10,000m final at the National Sports Festival in Ogun State, Nigerian athletes faced an unexpected challenge when the floodlights at the newly renovated MKO Abiola Stadium abruptly turned off mid-race, plunging the competition into darkness.
A video currently making the rounds on social media and was seen by First News correspondent on Sunday, captured the moment when the stadium lights failed, plunging the track and field into near-total darkness while athletes struggled to continue the race.
The MKO Abiola Stadium, recently renovated as a symbol of the government’s commitment to sports development.

First News earlier reported that a fire outbreak at the Alake Sports Complex in Ijeja, Abeokuta, sent athletes and spectators scrambling for safety.
According to reports, the fire incident occurred when a diesel truck supplying fuel to the complex’s generating set suddenly caught fire and erupted in flames.
