The Lagos State Police Command has arrested two suspects linked to the horrific murder and burning of a young woman in the Gangare area near the canal behind Mile 12 Market on May 24, 2025.
The incident, which drew outrage and sparked misinformation on social media, has now been clarified by the command’s spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, who confirmed in a statement on Monday that the killing was not connected to any alleged blasphemy.
According to Hundeyin, preliminary investigations revealed that the victim, a native of Nasarawa State, was targeted in a premeditated attack allegedly orchestrated by her estranged boyfriend, who is still on the run.
“This was not a blasphemy-related case as falsely circulated,” Hundeyin said. “It stemmed from a personal dispute. The deceased had been having longstanding issues with her ex-boyfriend, who tried to forcefully rekindle their relationship. He, along with others, plotted and carried out the attack.”
Two suspects have so far been arrested and are currently being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), where they are assisting detectives with ongoing efforts to track down the remaining accomplices.

While the police have yet to determine the victim’s exact occupation, they confirmed she had been living in the area with her northern relatives.
The command assured residents that calm has been restored in Gangare and across the Mile 12 axis.
“People should go about their lawful activities. We urge Lagosians not to panic and to desist from spreading unverified stories that may incite fear or tension,” Hundeyin added.
He also reiterated the command’s commitment to public safety and promised that updates on the investigation will be made available in due course.
