As political tensions deepen in Rivers State, Governor Siminalayi Fubara has issued a powerful Democracy Day message, urging Nigerians to defend democratic values even in times of crisis.
Speaking through his Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi, the governor called on citizens to approach the ongoing political challenges with “unity, courage, and renewed purpose.”
His remarks come amid his controversial suspension from office and the political instability that has gripped the state in recent months.
Fubara’s address struck a defiant yet hopeful tone. While acknowledging the trials facing the state, he reaffirmed his commitment to the principles of justice, accountability, and inclusive governance.
“The state’s future depends on collective action, innovation, and shared aspirations,” he declared.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s 26 years of uninterrupted democracy, the governor warned that the gains made since 1999 cannot be taken for granted.
“These events are a stark reminder of democracy’s fragility and the need for constant vigilance in its preservation,” he said, alluding to the political crisis and the removal of elected officials.

Despite the upheaval, Fubara assured citizens that his administration remains committed to protecting lives and property and upholding democratic institutions without political bias.
“We must honour the legacy of those who paved the way for our democracy by upholding the values they fought for,” he urged.
The embattled governor emphasized that the current turmoil should not be a cause for despair but a call to action. He called on Rivers people to continue demanding transparency, justice, and respect for civil rights.
“This is not a time to retreat. It’s a time to rise and defend governance powered by the will of the people.”
